State Principal Secretary (environment) Valsa Nair will issue a set of directions to the PMC under the Environment Protection Act,seeking a quick solution to the garbage row.
The directives will reach the PMC by Monday, she said on Friday, putting on PMC the onus of resolving the issue while villagers live in unhygienic conditions.
Civic officials are not making serious efforts to resolve the issue, she said. She feels it is but obvious that the villagers should protest against such a lethargic attitude of the PMC. Nair, who had visited the site a week ago, said it was high time the authorities capped the dumping site. She said that she would use all her powers to ensure the villagers lead a better life. She said the PMC should not dump any more waste there and speed up the proposals for alternative sites.
The PMC has proposed a number of sites but no formal proposal has reached the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board yet. How can the authority have just one dumping site? There is a need to have many more she said.
