Rehabilitation package for acid attack,rape victims soon: State

Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan said this after MLC Neelam Gorhe,advocate Varsha Deshpande and other members of a state-level committee set up to combat violence against women met him on September 4 and submitted a list of demands for welfare of women.

In a statement issued here,Gorhe said a signature campaign to prevent violence against women would be taken up from September 9-25 and representatives of various trade unions and other organisations would be invited to be part of the state-level committee. She said 91.78 per cent of the total cases of crimes against women registered with the state police was still unsolved.

In 2011,Mumbai,Nashik,Solapur,Pune,Aurangabad,Amravati,Nagpur,Thane and Navi Mumbai saw 81,832 cases pertaining to violence against women.

According to the state CID report,Nagpur,Pune,Mumbai,Nashik,Aurangabad,Solapur,Amravati and Ahmednagar have registered 1,002 rape cases. At least 53 per cent of the girls are minors.

Besides raising the demand for a rehabilitation package for survivors of rape and acid attacks,Gorhe urged the CM to ensure that rape accused did not get bail easily.
