Rambo Circus to mark silver jubilee next year

Vows it will be bigger and better after irrigation department denies permission on Mutha riverbed.

It was a moment that the entire crew of Rambo Circus had been waiting for since the last few years. The day – January 26, 2016 – marked 25 years of the famous circus and the management had grand plans to mark the occasion for which preparations had kickstarted over a year ago.

However, till the last week of December, the owners were busy scouting for a venue where they could stage a grand show to celebrate the 25th anniversary, but to no avail. Though the circus had been holding shows at the Mutha riverbed near Deccan Gymkhana for several years, they couldn’t get the permission this year after the irrigation department objected to any activities at the location citing a National Green Tribunal (NGT) order.

However, the circus is in no mood to drop the plans, and has decided to go ahead with the celebrations next year in a bigger manner. Sujith Dilip, owner of the circus, said, “The directive was quite disappointing. For months, we were looking for a suitable place that we could use for the show. But either the land was too small or the rent was too high.”

“We had plans to invite international circus artistes. Besides, several new acts and stunts were planned for the day. My father, who had started the circus, was going to be awarded on the day. Since we couldn’t go ahead with the celebrations this year, we plan to do the same next year. I’m quite confident that we will get the permission as we are not damaging the river in any way,” Dilip added.

Dilip said that he is in the process of collecting ‘never-seen-before’ elements for Rambo Circus. “Circuses across the country have been bearing the brunt of the ban on animals. And hence, at Rambo Circus, we plan to introduce costumes of wild animals made with animatronics – the use of robotic devices to emulate a human or animal,” he said.

“The first thing a person asks before buying a ticket is whether there are any wild animals. We are getting quotations from companies based abroad, especially for a bear costume. Such additions would attract more kids to the circus,” Dilip said, adding that he also has plans to introduce video backdrops projection, which he claims is not being used currently in any Indian circus.

“All these things are very costly and we need to figure out which option suits us the best. To survive in these challenging times when wild animals are banned, we need to incorporate new-age methods and technology in the circuses to pull crowds,” Dilip said, adding that he is constantly researching about acts and technology being used by circuses abroad.
