A waiter working at Peacock Restaurant and Bar in the Uttam Nagar area of Pune city allegedly murdered his employer on Tuesday night after they had an argument over his drinking habit. The police arrested the waiter on Wednesday.

The Uttam Nagar police identified the deceased as Santosh Sundar Shetty, 44, a resident of Sneha Vihar in Shivane, who owned the restaurant at Kondhawe Dhawade on NDA Road, where Umesh Dilip Giri, 38, had been working as a waiter for the past 22 days.

“The probe so far has revealed that Giri was consuming liquor. Santosh Shetty warned Giri that he would be sacked from his job if he was found working under the influence of alcohol,” said Mohan Khandare, a senior police inspector at the Uttam Nagar station.

According to Khandare, Giri allegedly said he would leave the job and demanded his salary. “But Shetty refused to give the salary as Giri had joined just 22 days before and had also taken some money in advance. So Giri got angry. He went inside the kitchen, took a knife, and attacked Shetty,” he said.

The police said Shetty was working at the restaurant’s cash counter when Giri allegedly assaulted him multiple times with the kitchen knife, leaving him in a pool of blood. He was rushed to a hospital but was pronounced dead by the doctors. Giri was staying in the staff quarters of the restaurant.
The police said Giri had no previous criminal record.

Assistant Police Inspector Feroz Mulani is investigating the murder case registered under Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita section 103 (1). The FIR was registered at the Uttam Nagar police station in the early hours of Wednesday.
