Four Maoists, including three women, were killed Wednesday after an eight-hour-long encounter with security forces in the Koparshi forest area along the Gadchiroli–Narayanpur border.

According to the police, they received intelligence inputs about the presence of Gatta Dalam, Company No 10, and other Maoist formations of the Gadchiroli Division in the dense forest region on August 25.

They added that acting on the tip-off, 19 C-60 commando units of the Maharashtra Police, and two Quick Action Teams (QATs) of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) launched a search operation under the supervision of M. Ramesh, Additional Superintendent of Police (Operations).

The police said security forces managed to reach the location early Wednesday despite heavy rain in the Bhamragad area over the past two days. While combing the forest, they came under indiscriminate fire from Maoists, prompting retaliatory action.

The gun battle, which stretched intermittently for nearly eight hours, resulted in the death of the four Maoists, said the police. They said the security forces later recovered four weapons from the spot, including one SLR rifle, two INSAS rifles, and a .303 rifle.

Search operations are continuing in the forest to trace other Maoists believed to be present in the area. The police said further details will be released once the operation concludes.
