The Pune city police announced on Wednesday that prohibitory orders will be in place in the 200 metre radius of two nomination filing centres in Pune — the Council Hall and the District Collector Office — from April 12 to 29, when the process of filing, scrutinising and withdrawal of nominations will be held for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
The jurisdiction of Pune City police includes areas under Pune and Shirur Lok Sabha constituencies, which will go to polls on May 13, and also Baramati, which go to vote on May 7. For Baramati, the designated nomination filing centre is Council Hall and for Pune and Shirur, it is the District Collector Office.
An order issued by the Joint Commission of Police for Pune city Praveen Pawar said under Section 144 of Code of Criminal Procedure, following restrictions will be put in the 200 metre radius of these centres from April 12 to April 29.
While filing the nomination with the designated officer, not more than four persons can accompany the candidate. No rallies, marches or speeches will be allowed in these areas. Use of loudspeakers and pasting messages is prohibited. Only three vehicles of the candidates will be allowed in the 100 metre radius of these centres. Those in violation of the norms will be liable for prosecution under Section 188 of the Indian Penal Code (disobedience of order promulgated by public officers).
Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure empowers district magistrate and officials with magisterial powers to issue prohibitory orders in cases of possible nuisance or danger to law and order.
