Pune: Fire at Kondhwa apartment claims senior citizen’s life, leaves another injured

A 65-year-old woman was killed and her 75-year-old brother-in-law was injured in a fire that started in a fourth floor apartment of a residential building in Kondhwa area of Pune on Sunday afternoon.
Officials from Pune fire brigade said that the fire started around 3.30 pm in a flat on the fourth floor of a building named Suvarnayug Sunshree society in NIBM area of Kondhwa. Police have identified the deceased as Vrunda Sangwar (65) and the injured person as Manoj Borkar (75), who is the husband of Sangwar’s sister.
“After receiving information about the fire, four fire tenders were pressed into action. Our teams took out an elderly woman and an elderly man in an injured state and rushed them to the hospital.” said fire officer Sameer Shaikh. The fire was brought under control around 4.30 pm.
Senior Inspector Vinay Patankar, in-charge of Kondhwa police station said, “Initial observations suggest that an oil was lighted in the house which came in contact with a curtain which caught fire. This fire spread to an air conditioning unit causing its compressor to explode. This intensified the fire which spread to other parts of the apartment. Further probe is on.”
Officials said that Borkar’s wife has been hospitalized for the two last months following a major cardiac surgery. Sangwar had come to stay with the family to help them out.
