The Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC) in Pune, one of the premier medical institutions in the country, is celebrating its platinum jubilee on April 30 and May 1, the institute said in a statement.
Lt Gen Arindam Chatterjee, DGMS (Army), Surg VAdm Arti Sarin, DGMS (Navy), Air Marshal Rajesh Vaidya, DGMS (Air), and Lt Gen Narendra Kotwal, Director and Commandant, AFMC, will be attending the jubilee functions, according to the statement issued by the tri-service institute on Thursday.
Lt Gen Daljit Singh, Director General of Armed Forces Medical Services (DGAFMS), and senior Colonel Commandant, Army Medical Corps, will inaugurate the Platinum Jubilee Medical Update on April 30, it said.

The institution was set up on May 1, 1948, under the stewardship of Col P P Chowdry, the first Commandant of AFMC. On August 4, 1962, the undergraduate wing of the AFMC was dedicated to the nation by the then defence minister V K Krishna Menon. AFMC offers training to medical officers, dental officers, nursing officers, and paramedics of the Indian Armed Forces, and in addition, the medical officers and paramedics of foreign countries.
“The indomitable spirit of those who passed through the portals of this noble institution is evident by their supreme sacrifices in the line of duty. Captain Devashish Sharma, an alumnus of the ‘Z’ batch of AFMC, was awarded Kirti Chakra (posthumous), the second highest peacetime gallantry award, in recognition of his exceptional bravery in the face of enemy. Many such alumni have been conferred with gallantry and distinguished service awards,” the statement said.
