Pune: 59-year-old woman killed, daughter-in-law injured as truck hits scooter near Gangadham Chowk

“Probe suggests the dumper truck hit the bike from behind. We have arrested the driver of the dumper,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police R Raja.

An officer from Market Yard police station said the injuries received by Damayanti were very serious and she died on the spot. Priyanka was rushed to a hospital and is currently under  treatment.

The arrested driver has been identified as Ashok Chhotelal Mahato (37), a resident of Bavdhan. Following the accident, Mahato was thrashed by locals and handed over to the police. Police said the dumper truck was transporting building construction material.

Rajya Sabha MP Medha Kulkarni posted in X, “I have written to the Pune City Police Commissioner insisting on the strict enforcement of the ban on heavy vehicles on the roads. Heavy vehicle traffic is prohibited. In spite of the ban, heavy vehicles are seen plying on the city roads. The accident near Gangadham Chowk happened because heavy vehicles were allowed where they are prohibited.”

Officials from the traffic control branch clarified there is no previous ban on the movement of heavy vehicles on the road where the accident took place.
