Devendra Fadnavis.
With hardly six months to go for the civic polls, politics in the city has been heating up with Mayor Prashant Jagtap urging Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to fulfill his assurance of resolving issues plaguing the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) that has been pending with the state government.
In a letter to Fadnavis, Jagtap said, “I am requesting you as the mayor of the city to respect the feelings of citizens and fulfill the assurances made by the state government to resolve our civic issues with immediate effect.”
Jagtap said that the chief minister had called a meeting on May 13 to review the issues pending with the state government. “All legislators and MPs from the city attended the meeting, where an assurance was given on resolving certain issues with immediate effect. It has been more than three months now, but no step has been taken to address them which is very sad,” the mayor said.
In the 2014 Assembly and Lok Sabha elections, most citizens elected BJP candidates, but the failure of the state government to resolve civic issues has taken voters by surprise, Jagtap said. “The chief minister has been the mayor of Nagpur municipal corporation and was aware of urban issues. I too expect as a mayor to resolve the issues of PMC,” Jagtap added.
The ruling NCP in PMC and the BJP at the state are at loggerheads over the civic issues and are taking on each other aggressively with eyes on the forthcoming civic polls. The eight BJP legislators led by guardian minister Girish Bapat recently held a meeting with the chief minister over the development plan of the city. They demanded limited construction on the hilltops and slopes in the city in an attempt to play down the NCP’s claim of the same.
Earlier, the BJP tried to corner the NCP on bad conditions of roads in the city, while the NCP criticised the BJP for adding to the sufferings of citizens by not withdrawing the water cut despite good monsoon.
