Police van with injured cop hits 4 youths;

Four youths were injured,one of them seriously,when a speeding police van that was taking an injured constable to hospital rammed into them at Mahavir Chowk on MG Road post midnight on Saturday.

Four youths were injured,one of them seriously,when a speeding police van that was taking an injured constable to hospital rammed into them at Mahavir Chowk on MG Road post midnight on Saturday. Van driver Shital Bapu Shinde,a police naik with the motor transport division,has been booked for rash driving.

Constable Riyaz Noor Shaikh,attached to the Pune Cantonment police station,was on nakabandi duty at Kondhwa when a Nigerian national Ismail Khadus Jalil (19),riding a motorcycle,accidentally knocked him down. Jalil was taken into custody while injured Shaikh was being taken to Ruby Hall Clinic when the second mishap occurred.

The first accident took place around 12.20 am and the second around 1.15 am. The van hit two bikes with three persons on the first and one more on the second. The injured — Rohan Randhir (20),A Joseph Anthony (20) and Abbas Yusuf Gheewala (19),who were on the first bike,and Vikram Adhav (20) — have been admitted to various private hospitals. The condition of Adhav is reportedly serious. Senior police inspector Prasad Hasabnis of Kondhwa police confirmed that Jalil had been arrested. Senior police inspector SG Kanase of Wanawadi police,who was on night patrol when the accidents happened,said,”Constable Shaikh with Cantonment police station was on nakabandi duty at Jyoti Hotel Chowk in Kondhwa,when he was hit by the bike. A police van labeled Kondhwa II Mobile was called in to take the injured constable to the hospital. The second mishap took place on way to the hospital.”

Immediately after the accident,some local residents had attacked the police van and broke its glasses. Kanase and assistant commissioner of police VT Pawar,who was also on night patrol,reached the spot and tried to calm the people. Asked if any complaint has been registered against the three injured riding one bike,senior police inspector and investigating officer Sushma Chavan of Cantonment police said,”We have not yet filed any such complaint
