The Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) has decided to scrap 46 junk buses while also introducing a ‘next stop announcement system’ across its fleet. The dual initiative aims to improve efficiency and commuter convenience, particularly for visually impaired, elderly, and PWD passengers, officials said.

“It was required for the passengers to receive loud and clear information about the next bus stop while travelling in a bus. The installation process is in the closing stages, and the required audio recordings have also been completed. The system will be operational in all PMPML buses within this year,” said Nivarutti Bhande, senior stores manager of PMPML.

“We have also launched 15 new buses last week and not only with the audio system we are also installing the digital boards outside and as well as the inside of the bus. It will be more convenient for all the passengers for the trip. The cases of miscommunication of stops will also reduce”, Bhande added. “We have decided on the introduction of four hundred new buses which will be launched in phases, as this week we have already launched 15 new buses”, he added.

Simultaneously, PMPML is scrapping 46 buses that are no longer roadworthy. The spare parts will be auctioned. The process was previously delayed due to low scrap value, is now in its final phase and will be completed soon.

“The scrapping of buses was already planned earlier. However, the scrap was not done because it took time to get all the permissions and the required documents done, which led to a delay. But now, the process is done and we are moving forward with it,” said. Bhande.

“According to the government policy a bus should run a maximum of 12 years but there were buses which were working since the last 14-15 years which caused disturbances in the journey of the passengers,” an official said.
