PMC to harvest rainwater on all its buildings

PMC officials said the civic body would install rainwater har-vesting systems on all its 74 buildings at a cost of Rs 1.75 cr.
Realising the need for rainwater harvesting to recharge groundwater stream, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has decided to lead from the front by installing the system on 74 civic buildings.
“The rainwater harvesting system has been installed only on the main building. There is a need to undertake and encourage rainwater harvesting in the city. Thus, the civic body would soon install the system on 74 civic buildings in the city by spending Rs 1.75 crore,” said Balasaheb Bodke, chairperson of the standing committee.
Bodke said this would ensure rain water falling on the total six lakh square feet of roof tops of the civic buildings would be conserved. The water collected would be used to recharge ground water through borewells, he said, adding that the PMC would use this water for bathroom and gardening purposes.
In the first rainwater harvesting initiative taken up two years ago at the main building, the PMC, while undertaking construction of extension of the civic headquarters, found natural streams in the area. This water is now being used for construction of the new building and there are also plans to use it for refilling tankers watering the civic gardens.
