Pune Municipal Commissioner Mahesh Pathak said while repair works of footpaths are over,clearing of encroachments completely will take time. Additional chief secretary (urban development department) TC Benjamin had earlier set a deadline for clearing and repairing footpaths in the city.

Benjamin said he was informed that major works relating to MSEB and cable laying were on,while other repair works were completed.

The UDD said the responsibility to ensure that repair works are completed was to be with the respective ward officers.

Pathak said that he was receiving a weekly reports on footpath repairs. “Officials are also taking action against encroachers,” he said.

According to earlier reports,however,the PMC claimed that it had cleared most of the encroachments along the 591 km of footpaths in the city as directed by Benjamin. While debris,paver blocks,carts and vegetable vendors have been removed,officials will continue with the drive.

Phule auditorium to be completed by August,says Mayor

The pending work of constructing an auditorium dedicated to Mahatma Jyotirao Phule should be on track with mayor Vaishali Bankar assuring that civil work for the same would be completed by August this year. The proposal was pending since 2003. PMC officials said that work was on to develop the 200-m stretch as 62 house owners and 300 tenants and ward officials had to be rehabilitated.

PMC to outsource workers

Additional Municipal Commissioner Naresh Zurmure,when asked about MLC Vandana Chavan’s allegation of non-maintenance of gardens,said,”We are planning to hire 50-60 persons from private agencies.” He said that PMC has outsourced staff for security and citizen facilitation centres. There was no question of PMC engineers association opposing privatisation,he said. This is the need of the hour as the proposal for hiring more employees was still pending with the government,he added.
