With a portion of the compound wall of the College of Engineering,Pune (CoEP) being demolished on Friday by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC),the college has alleged that the demolition was carried out without prior notice.
The college said that it has incurred a loss of up to Rs 15 lakh due to the demolition of a wall near the mechanical engineering department.
Senior faculty members of the college said that the civic body had not offered any explanation for the action.
BJ Birajdar, secretary,Building Works Department,CoEP,said,In 2010 we were given the approval by PMC for constructing the wall after which we began the construction. After 70 per cent of the work getting done, they asked us to stop the construction in February 24 this year. We sent them a letter on February 27 asking the reason, but they did not reply. So this sudden demolition really comes as a surprise for us.
He further said that CoEP has all required land records, including the 7×12 extract, the property card and the measurement sheets – which prove that the college has ownership of the land in question, around which the compound wall was built.
On being asked,PMC encroachment department chief said that the wall was found to be an illegal construction as there is an ongoing dispute between CoEP and the Pune District Judge with this land around which this wall was constructed. We had to demolish the wall because of legal problem.
