Pawar rues cops’ failure, case may go to CID or CBI

Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar on Friday said that failure to crack Dabholkar murder case has come as a big embarrassment for Pune police

Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar on Friday said that failure to crack Dabholkar murder case has come as a big embarrassment for Pune police.

He made the statement after inaugurating the hi-tech kitchen at Sassoon General Hospital and later repeated it at an award function.

Addressing the media on the sidelines of the function,Pawar said if the need arises the investigation of the murder would be handed over to CID or CBI.

“We are monitoring the developments in the case every day. I have been personally speaking to Commissioner Gulabrao Pol,ATS Chief Rakesh Maria and Director General of Police. As many as 20 teams are working on the case at different locations and several people have been picked up by the police from Pune,Goa and other places. However, the interrogation has failed to get desired results. It is indeed a reason for embarrassment for Pune police as 10 days have passed after the murder,” said Pawar.

On whether the state government was planning to rope in CID or CBI to investigate the case,he said,“To find killers, the state government is willing to hand over the investigation to any competent agency. However,a decision on this would only be taken after consultations with the chief minister, state home minister and Union home minister.”

Reacting to opposition parties seeking resignation of Home Minister R R Patil for ‘failing to maintain law and order in the state’,Pawar said those making such demands were entitled to express their opinions. He,however, added the failure to arrest killers was indeed a reason for embarrassment.

Pawar said Dabholkar was not involved in any property-related disputes and hence there could be no personal agenda to eliminate him. “He used to keep to himself. He was a completely transparent person with progressive thought. It is being said it could be a handiwork of contract killers but this is still a speculation. Police is investigating if people belonging to Sanatani ideology were involved in the murder as Dabholkar’s work did not go well with them,” he said.
