Octroi evasion: PCMC issues notice to jeweller

The Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation on Monday issued a notice to a city-based jeweller to pay a penalty for octroi evasion to the tune of Rs 12.20 lakh.

The Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) on Monday issued a notice to a city-based jeweller to pay a penalty for octroi evasion to the tune of Rs 12.20 lakh. This is the third notice that PCMC sent to the jeweller for octroi evasion.

Addressing reporters,PCMC octroi department head Ashok Mundhe said MK Kolap,the PCMC octroi department superintendent,suspected foul play when he spotted a white Innova car going towards Pune on Monday. He and a team of octroi department officials followed and stopped the vehicle at Bhorhadewadi. The officials found gold,silver and diamond jewellery in the vehicle.

When questioned,the vehicle owner,who identified himself as Anand Bhalchandra Zarkar,admitted that he had brought the jewellery into the city without paying the requisite octroi fees.

The PCMC officials then seized the vehicle and jewellery.

The vehicle was carrying two kg,885 gm and 680 mg gold,25 kg and 516 gram silver and diamonds worth Rs 1.96 lakh. The collective worth of the jewellery seized was Rs 55.47 lakh,officials said.
