Former Davis Cup tennis player Nitten Kirrtane created sporting history by winning two gold medals for India at the Pickleball World Cup 2025 held in Florida, USA, from October 26 to November 3.
Representing India among 68 countries, Pune-based Kirrtane clinched gold in both the 50+ Men’s Singles and 50+ Men’s Doubles categories, partnering with Suryaveer Bhullar, president of the Pickleball Association of India.
“Life has come a full circle for me,” said Kirrtane after returning home.
“Florida has always been lucky — it’s where I won my first Tennis World Championship medal in 2018, and now to win the Pickleball World Cup here makes it truly special and fulfilling.” He won a silver medal in the mixed doubles 40-plus category at the 2018 World Tennis Championship in Florida, partnering with Vlada Kirilovska of Latvia.
Kirrtane insists it was not a complete switch from tennis but a natural progression. “Both tennis and pickleball complement each other beautifully. Pickleball has sharpened my reflexes and touch, which in turn helps my tennis game,” he explained.
“What began as a fun wall practice one day turned into a real passion.”
His training for the tournament was meticulous. “I had daily drilling sessions for singles and doubles, backed by gym workouts and recovery routines. It helped me peak at the right time in Florida,” he said.
The finals, he says, tested his mental toughness. “Both matches were rally-point games to 21, so staying calm and trusting the game plan made all the difference.”
Kirrtane hopes his success brings more attention to pickleball in India.
“It’s a fun, social, and inclusive sport — loved across generations. The game is booming in the USA, and India has huge potential to grow,” he said.
“I only hope Indian pickleball players get even half the recognition and support that cricketers receive. We, too, are giving our best to make our nation proud.”
Pickleball is a paddle sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis. It is played with paddles and a perforated polymer ball on a court the size of a badminton court.
