(Source: File)A 27-year-old murder undertrial at the Yerawada Central Prison was grievously injured after he was attacked with a piece of stone tile by two other undertrial inmates inside Barrack number 1 of the prison on Monday morning.
Police have identified the injured inmate as Vishal Nagnath Gaikwad (27), a resident of Laxminagar in Yerawada, who has been in judicial custody after his arrest in January 2019 in connection with a murder. Police have identified the two assailants as Akash Satish Chandalia (30), a murder accused and Deepak Sanjay Reddy (27), an accused in an attempt to murder case.
The incident took place around 6.45am on Monday. “Initial probe points to an old rivalry between the injured inmate and the attackers. While the morning activities of the prison schedule were on early Monday morning, Chandalia and Reddy suddenly attacked Kamble with a piece of stone tile. After hearing the commotion, the prison guards rushed to the spot and stopped the attackers. Kamble was rushed to the hospital,” said an officer from the Yerawada police station.
“Kamble sustained a serious injury to the head and underwent a surgery. His condition is critical and he is in the ICU. His statement will be recorded once he is in a position to speak to us,” said an officer from Yerawada police station.
In the first week of September this year, a 52-year-old inmate of the Yerawada Central Prison undergoing a life sentence was attacked with a nail by two undertrial inmates, following a dispute over sleeping space in their barrack. In December last year, an argument between undertrial inmates at the Yerawada Central Prison had led to a violent scuffle between them. Only last year, a CCTV network comprising over 812 cameras installed inside the Yerawada Central Prison became functional.
