The wife of a 25-year-old , who was allegedly murdered in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar by his in-laws for marrying from another caste, on Sunday alleged that the couple had earlier alerted the police about threat to their lives but they were denied any protection.

On July 14, 25-year-old Amit Murlidhar Salunkhe was allegedly attacked with sharp weapons by the father and a relative of Vidya Kirtishahi (18), whom he had eloped with and married. He was immediately admitted to a local hospital where he passed away on July 25.

Speaking to The Indian Express, Vidya said, “On May 2, we had a registered marriage. After my husband’s family accepted us, we started living at their home. However, our close friends told us that my family was threatening to kill us. They were telling us that they will take a Sairat-type revenge (referring to the popular Marathi movie which highlighted the menace of ‘honour killings’ ) for marrying ouside the caste.”

Vidya claimed that on June 10, she and her husband had gone to Jawahar Nagar police station in city. “There we were told to give our complaint in writing. Both of us were told to file separate complaints. We wrote in the complaint that there was threat to our lives from my family. We also told the police that we should be given police protection. However, we were not given any protection,” Vidya alleged.
On July 14, around 10 pm, Amit who was at his residence in Indira Nagar, was allegedly asked to come out of the house by an unidentified person.

“He told my husband to come out…As soon as my husband walked up to 100 metres, he was attacked by two persons. After hearing the commotion outside, we all rushed outside. Amit was lying in a pool of blood. He was conscious. He told us that my father and a distant relative had attacked him with sharp weapon. We immediately took him to the hospital,” Vidya recalled.

When asked about Vidya’s allegations, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone II) Navneet Kumar Kavat said, “The matter is being investigated. We will take appropriate action if anyone is found guilty.”

Kavat said they have provided security to the girl and her in-laws. “A 24 hour security has been provided to the family,” he said.

After 10 days of being hospitalised, Amit passed away on July 25. In his dying declaration, Amit has named the two attackers, who have been arrested, Kavat said.

They were identified as Appasaheb Ashok Kirtishahi (35), a relative of Vidya and Geetaram Bhaskar Kirtishahi (52), her father.
Kavat said the woman’s father had secured interim anticipatory bail from a local court till August 1.

“We appealed in the same court. We told the court that earlier an attempt to murder case was filed and now a murder case has been filed. And therefore the bail should be cancelled. The court cancelled the bail and we have arrested him,” Kavat said.

Kavat said they have also arrested a third person, whose name has not been revealed yet, in the case.

Sumit Salunkhe, brother of Amit, said,”When Amit was attacked, I reached the spot in two minutes. It seems like they had snapped wires in the area. It was a pre-planned murder…”

Condemning the incident, Baramati MP Supriya Sule said,”It is sad that such incidents are still taking place in a progressive state like Maharashtra…I will be seeking full details of the case from the police and the victim’s family.”

For the first 16 years, he worked on the desk, edited stories, made pages, wrote special stories and handled The Indian Express edition. In 31 years of his career, he has regularly written stories on a range of topics, primarily on civic issues like state of roads, choked drains, garbage problems, inadequate transport facilities and the like. He has also written aggressively on local gondaism. He has primarily written civic stories from Pimpri-Chinchwad, Khadki, Maval and some parts of Pune. He has also covered stories from Kolhapur, Satara, Solapur, Sangli, Ahmednagar and Latur. He has had maximum impact stories from Pimpri-Chinchwad industrial city which he has covered extensively for the last three decades.   Manoj More has written over 20,000 stories. 10,000 of which are byline stories. Most of the stories pertain to civic issues and political ones. The biggest achievement of his career is getting a nearly two kilometre road done on Pune-Mumbai highway in Khadki in 2006. He wrote stories on the state of roads since 1997. In 10 years, nearly 200 two-wheeler riders had died in accidents due to the pathetic state of the road. The local cantonment board could not get the road redone as it lacked funds. The then PMC commissioner Pravin Pardeshi took the initiative, went out of his way and made the Khadki road by spending Rs 23 crore from JNNURM Funds. In the next 10 years after the road was made by the PMC, less than 10 citizens had died, effectively saving more than 100 lives. Manoj More's campaign against tree cutting on Pune-Mumbai highway in 1999 and Pune-Nashik highway in 2004 saved 2000 trees. During Covid, over 50 doctors were  asked to pay Rs 30 lakh each for getting a job with PCMC. The PCMC administration alerted Manoj More who did a story on the subject, asking then corporators how much money they demanded....The story worked as doctors got the job without paying a single paisa. Manoj More has also covered the "Latur drought" situation in 2015 when a "Latur water train" created quite a buzz in Maharashtra. He also covered the Malin tragedy where over 150 villagers had died.     Manoj More is on Facebook with 4.9k followers (Manoj More), on twitter manojmore91982 ... Read More
