Monsoon picks up in Maharashtra with rainfall just about adequate

Indian Meteorological Department (IMD)’s monsoon records shows that Maharashtra has reported a slight excess of rainfall since the start of June.

Pune and its ghat regions have been given yellow alert for the next few days as widespread rainfall has been predicted for the region. In the last tw days, Monsoon has picked up in Maharashtra, bringing relief to the state.

Indian Meteorological Department (IMD)’s monsoon records shows that Maharashtra has reported a slight excess of rainfall since the start of June. The state has reported 504.1 mm of rainfall compared to its normal of 476.9 mm. Pune, Kolhapur, Palghar, Nashik, Gadchiroli, Nagpur and Bhandara districts have reported large excess rainfall in the state. Ahilyanagar, Beed, Jalna, Solapur Amravati, Akola and Hingoli,on the other hand have reported a large deficit.

In case a region receives more than 20 per cent rainfall it is slated to be in large excess while if the deficit is more than 20 per cent it is said to be in large deficit. The other districts have reported normal rainfall.

Since the start of monsoon, 8 districts have received excess while 20 have received normal while 8 are in deficit in terms of rainfall. In terms of rainfall distribution, as per IMD, Madhya Maharashtra (which includes the district of Pune) has received the largest amount of rainfall that week starting from June 25. While Marathwada has continued reporting large deficit in terms of rainfall- large excess rainfall has been reported in the week starting from July 24. However, Vidharbha has been mostly in deficit except the two weeks of July starting from July 02.

At present monsoon rainfall is active over most parts of Maharashtra.

Anupam Kashyapi, former head of the IMD’s weather forecasting department has said the current rainfall would reduce from Sunday afternoon. Widespread rainfall is likely to continue for the ghat regions of Pune and the present depression which has caused the rainfall will move westward towards Madhya Pradesh due to strong Westerlies.

“The Depression likely to move away,Westward via MadhyaPradesh,so rain activity in State likely to reduce,though due to strong Westerlies from ArabianSea & Upper air cyclonic circulation over South-Gujarat,Widespread rain with isolated heavy/very heavy rain likely to continue in Konkan(even in Mumbai),Ghats of MM(including Pune ghats. Pune City rain likely reduce from 27 July,afternoon; a few moderate spells likely with almost overcast condition,” he said
