Pune, like other parts of the country, has seen a warmer than usual winter. (File photo)For the last few days, Pune’s temperature has dropped significantly with mercury touching 10 degrees Celsius. But winter for Pune this season has been unusually warm like the rest of India.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has talked about temperature dipping in the next few days. Pune is finally feeling the chill due to the lower maximum temperature in the city.
On January 16, Pune had recorded 10.8 degrees Celsius which was the lowest recorded at Shivajinagar for this month.
Thursday’s minimum of 11.5 degrees Celsius is the second lowest temperature recorded this season.
The IMD, in its forecast, has said the present temperature dip is mostly due to the presence of cold winds from the North.
Most of north India at present is under a severe cold wave with Delhi and other parts reporting around 5 degrees temperatures regularly.
Fog and haze have disrupted transportation in many parts of the country.
Pune, like other parts of the country, has seen a warmer than usual winter.
IMD in its winter forecast has said most of the country would see above normal temperatures. Western Disturbances — the moisture carrying winds from the Mediterranean Sea — has been lower than usual which has caused a dip in winter rainfall.
Cold wave conditions in the northern parts of the country which bring cold winds to Maharashtra and Pune have also been low.
An active El Nino, the warm ocean current over the Pacific, is the cause of the warmer than usual winter in most parts of the country.
While the realised temperatures are above normal, the actual feeling of chill has been felt. This is mostly because of the lower than usual maximum temperature which has reduced the ambient temperature in the city.
IMD officials said this has resulted in the feeling of it being colder than it is.
No change in temperature is expected for the next 48 hours.
