Mayoral polls today

With the mayoral elections on Thursday,the new General Body of the Pune Municipal Corporation is also set to be formed.

With the mayoral elections on Thursday,the new General Body of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is also set to be formed. The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has emerged the single largest party with 51 seats and has nominated first-time corporator Vaishali Bankar from Hadapsar as the mayoral candidate while Congress with 28 seats with whom whom the NCP has decided to tie up post elections has nominated Kothrud corporator Deepak Mankar for the post of deputy mayor.

The BJP-SS alliance has nominated Varsha Tapkir of the BJP and Vijay Deshmukh of the Sena for the posts of mayor and deputy mayor. While Congress rebel Mukari Algude has filed as a rebel candidate for the post of deputy mayor.

However leader of the Congress in the PMC Arvind Shinde told reporters on Wednesday that Algude would withdraw his nomination before the elections.

“We have discussed the matter with MLA Vinayak Nimhan. The Chief Minister and state Congress president have convinced Nimhan and accordingly Algude will withdraw his nomination,” said Shinde.

The house will have 51 NCP seats and 28 Congress seats claiming the majority while the saffron combine has 43 seats; BJP’s 26 seats,Sena’s 15 and RPI’s two seats.

The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena has 29 seats in the PMC but did not field any candidate for the post of mayor and deputy mayor.
