On September 1, the police had lathi-charged protesters demanding Maratha reservation in Jalna, sparking outrage across the state. (File) With Manoj Jarange Patil, who has been on a hunger strike demanding reservation for Marathas in Maharashtra, ‘rejecting’ the Government Resolution on granting them Kunbi caste certificates, the Pune unit of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) said that political parties want the issue to remain hanging to suit their convenience.
“The issue of Maratha reservation has been a demand for the last 7-8 years. Both the Mahayuti and Maha Vikas Aghadi (the ruling and Opposition alliances) have used this issue to create a favourable environment for the elections. For them, the reservation demand is not a problem to be solved but the only purpose seems to be to trap people in politics,” Mukund Kirdat, convenor of the Pune unit of AAP, said.
“The ruling parties have always tried to keep the issue pending by forming committees, keeping the matter stuck in court, promising to discuss, survey…etc. The people of Jalna district are demanding that the Kunbi Marathas of Marathwada get the benefit of this reservation. Also, since there is a BJP double-engine government in the state and Centre, it is possible to increase the total reservation limit. This will also help Muslims and the Dhangar community get justice according to the Constitution,” Kirdat added.
Kirdat alleged that political parties wanted to keep the issue hanging, thus creating tension in the Maratha-OBC community. “This problem is becoming more acute as the education facilities and opportunities as well as government job opportunities are inadequate for the common people. Farmers are not getting a fair price for agri products,” he pointed out.
“The policy of increasing the share in one bread instead of providing more breads of opportunity is the policy of the established BJP, Shiv Sena and other parties. All this is the result of the anti-public interest policy of the BJP,” he said, adding that the AAP had protested at various places, including Pune, demanding the resignation of Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who holds charge of the home department.
