Days after a mentally unstable State Transport bus driver, who is now under observation in an isolated cell of the the Yerawada mental hospital, had run amok driving a hijacked bus into people and vehicles killing eight persons and injuring 30 others, police have started recording statements of eyewitnesses.
After his murderous drive of 45 minutes in an empty bus he had hijacked from the ST bus depot at Swargate on January 25 morning,Santosh Maruti Mane (39),was arrested immediately. Mane was shifted to the mental hospital on Saturday after tests at Sassoon Hospital confirmed he was mentally ill.
Rajendrasinh Mohite, assistant commissioner of police (crime branch),who was handed over the investigations, said,As we do not have Mane in our custody now,we are focusing on statements of eyewitnesses. We have recorded statements of about six eyewitnesses so far.
Police have identified 30 to 32 eyewitnesses.
Mohite added,The incident had taken place in the jurisdiction of five police stations. Collating information and panchnama reports from all these police stations is a big job.
At the regional mental hospital in Yerawada,Mane is being kept under observation in an isolated ward meant for prisoners. He has been kept in a single room with only staff and ward doctors monitoring his every move. We cannot take any chances, said Dr Vilas Bhailume, medical superintendent. While he did not divulge details of Manes condition,he said the report will be given to the court on Wednesday.
We are observing him. There is no medical treatment as of now since the court has directed us to observe his medical condition and send in our comment. I cannot give an opinion right now, Bhailume said.
