Man gets 7-year RI in 2011 assault case

A 34-year-old labourer was sentenced to seven-year rigorous imprisonment for attacking the 18-year-old daughter of his employer after she refused to lend him money.

A 34-year-old labourer was sentenced to seven-year rigorous imprisonment for attacking the 18-year-old daughter of his employer after she refused to lend him money. Additional sessions judge Suchitra Ghodke also imposed a fine of Rs 15,000 on convict Mangesh alias Mangalsingh Hemsingh Rathod,a native of Gulbarga in Karnataka in the 2011 case.

Baswaraj Ambu Chauhan (42),a native of Gulbarga in Karnataka who resided at Krantinagar area,had lodged a complaint against Rathod with Lonavala rural police in April 2011.

According to police,Rathod had not reported for work for two days as he had to take care of his child while his wife was away at their native place in Karnataka. On the third day,Rathod asked Chauhan to pay his wage and some money in advance as his child was unwell. Chauhan asked him to collect the money at the work site.

However,around 2 pm on April 15,2011,Rathod went to Chauhan’s house when his daughter Neela (18) was alone. He demanded money and when she refused to oblige,a drunken Rathod attacked Neela with a meat-chopper. Neighbors Suman Koli and Pooja Koli who tried to rescue Neela were also attacked. Neela suffered head injuries and had to be admitted to a hospital in Pune. The neighbors also suffered minor injuries.

Additional public prosecutor A A Jaybhaye examined 10 witnesses to prove the charges of the accused. The investigation team included inspector Vishnu Pawar,police sub-inspector Kailash Deshmane,assistant sub-inspector Ogle,police naik Vasant Wani and constable Mundhe.
