Pune city police have arrested a married man from Jammu and Kashmir for allegedly cheating a Pune woman of Rs 45 lakh after developing contacts with her through a matrimonial website.
Police said the accused, identified as Amar Premlal Verma (38), even had a physical relationship with the 45-year-old victim woman on false promises to marry her.
The victim had lodged an FIR at Kalepadal police station. Police said the accused came in contact with the woman last year through a matrimonial website. He came to Pune to meet her. “The accused is Class 12 pass, but he falsely claimed to be an engineer and a businessman while interacting with the woman. He was already married, but did not tell the victim. He promised to marry her. He told the victim that he suffered losses in business and then took about Rs 45 lakhs from her,” said assistant police inspector Vilas Sutar, the investigation officer of this case.
After the victim lodged a complaint against the accused, police launched a search for him. Acting on a tip-off, a police team nabbed him from Indore in Madhya Pradesh. Cops produced him before a court in Pune on Thursday.
“The court remanded the accused to police custody till February 10, for further investigation,” stated a press release issued by senior police inspector Mansingh Patil on Thursday.
Police probe so far revealed that the accused is allegedly a notorious criminal who cheated several women to the tune of Rs 2 crore. Police said using fake IDs, he contacted the victim women through matrimonial sites. He developed a physical relationship with the women after gaining their confidence by giving false assurances to marry them. Then he took money from them in cash and through online transactions for various purposes and escaped.
Police said at least four such offences are lodged against the accused at Delhi, Faridabad, Bhopal and Indore.
