(Express Illustration)A farmer couple in Maharashtra has donated the organs of their 11-year-old son who was declared brain-dead after he was fatally injured in a road accident in Satara on Friday.
On Sunday, the boy’s heart was successfully transplanted in a 16-year-old boy at Dr D Y Patil Hospital while one kidney each was sent to be transplanted in a 12-year-old and 17-year-old at Command Hospital and at Symbiosis University Hospital and Research Centre in Pune respectively.
Dr Vinayak Kale, Dean B J Government Medical College, said that counselling was done for the patient’s relatives and the organs were retrieved at Sassoon General Hospital.
Aarti Gokhale, coordinator of the Pune Zonal Transplant Coordination Committee (Western zone), said that the boy had met with a road accident at Satara while his parents were working in the fields. He was admitted to Satara civil hospital where he was declared brain dead.
The children who received the organs are recovering well, said Gokhale.
Pune region recorded the highest number of organs donated last year. Data shows that 158 organs were donated in the Pune region last year. These were from a total of 58 deceased donors registered last year.
In 2022 there were 46 deceased donors and in 2021 there were 44.
Meanwhile, in Mumbai a total of 49 deceased donors were registered last year followed by 35 in Nagpur and six in Aurangabad.
