Donor, recipient die after liver transplant at Pune hospital: high-level inquiry committee set up, leading liver transplant surgeon to head panel

Prof Mohamed Rela, a leading figure in liver transplantation and president, International Liver Transplant Society, Chennai, will chair the high-profile committee that has been set up to review the case of the death of a donor after a liver transplant surgery at Sahyadri Hospitals.

The state health directorate has set up the committee to review and investigate the case where both the donor and recipient died after the liver transplant surgery. Kamini Koamkar (42), a resident of Hadapsar, had donated part of her liver to her husband Bapu Balkrishna Koamkar (49) on August 15.

Post-transplant, Bapu Koamkar passed away while Kamini, who had initially recovered well, developed hypotensive shock and multi-organ dysfunction. According to Sahyadri Hospitals authorities, she could not be saved despite advanced treatment.

The Pune and state health departments have taken cognisance of the issue and the hospital was directed to submit the medical records of the case. Sahyadri Hospitals has been asked to suspend living liver transplants, while the committee investigates the case.

Dr Bhagwan Pawar, deputy director of health, Pune division, and a member of the committee, said the postmortem report has not been received yet. However, all documents of the case will be thoroughly reviewed.

Other members of the committee include Dr Ram Prabhu, liver transplant surgeon, KEM hospital, Mumbai, Dr Rahul Pandit, intensivist and former president of Indian Society of Critical Care Medicine, Dr Vasant Nagvekar, infectious diseases specialist and secretary of National Infectious Diseases Society of India, Dr Vijay Vhora, founding member of Liver Transplant Anaesthesia Society of India, Dr Akash Shukla, director, Regional cum State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (ROTTO-SOTTO) for the Western region and Maharashtra, and Dr Padmasen Ranbagale, general surgeon at Sassoon General Hospital.
