Tension erupted in Kashiwadi area near Bhavani Peth after Avinash Bagwe, son of former minister of state for home Ramesh Bagwe, allegedly created ruckus at a polling booth inside a housing society built under Slum Rehabilitation Scheme.
The dispute at the polling booth started over a help desk that the Congress had allegedly set up within its 100 metre boundary. Assistant Commissioner of Police Ranjeet Dhure said,”As setting up the help desk was illegal, our officers asked Congress men to remove it. The party members first refused to go out but after our officer warned them of legal action, they left the place.”
Around 10 am,Avinash came to the spot and allegedly started creating ruckus. Dhure added,”Bagwe came there with 20 supporters and went to the premises of the polling booth ignoring repeated warnings by our officers not to go in. He then threatened our officers and dared them to take an action against him.”
As the situation was going out of control,Dhure,as in charge of the Khadak sub division, went to the spot and asked Bagwe and his supporters to leave the premises. “As he did not pay heed,we had to use force to bring them out of the building complex.”
Sources with Pune police said as the housing society was located in a sensitive area, police had objected to setting up a polling booth there. “In other cases we receive full co-operation from the PMC. I do not understand why PMC set up a polling booth here,” said Police Commissioner Meeran Borwankar.
Bagwe was booked under Sections 143 (unlawful assembly),353 (Assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty) of the IPC and sections of People’s Representation Act 130 (prohibition of canvassing near polling booth) and 131 (misconduct at polling station). No one has yet been arrested.
