With a motive to impart international status to Kabaddi, the Maharashtra State Kabaddi Association (MSKA) has organised a training workshop for Kabaddi coaches from across the state at Chhatrapati Shivaji Stadium,Mhalunge Balewadi. Started on May 3,the seven-day seminar aims to update Kabaddi coaches on international as well as scientific methods of teaching Kabaddi.
Kabaddi is a game with its roots in Maharashtra. Today, the game is popular in many countries such as Japan,Iran,Malaysia,England,Australia and so on. Unfortunately, advancements in the game on the international levels are not propagated systematically to coaches who train students at district or village levels. The motive behind this workshop is that while keeping intact the tradition and the legacy associated with the game, international developments such as- standards, mat practices, digital scoring and so on are noticed and practiced on local levels, said Fida Qureshi, treasurer,MSKA.
Over 56 coaches, approximately three from each of the 24 districts from across the state are attending the seminar that will conclude on May 10. A seminar organised specifically for the coaches, for the first time in the history of the association the seminar includes practice sessions, panel discussions, gym and cardio activities and so on. We assemble at 6.30 am and the practical sessions that go on till 8.30 include-weight training, yoga, speed and agility training, aerobics and so on. Game improvisation techniques such as scientific strategies in Kabaddi, rules and regulations are explained as well, said Shraddha Naik, planner of the seminar.
Besides, some of the advanced methods and systems taught to the coaches include- cross training,Swiss ball exercise, biometric training and so on. It is to introduce them to world class infrastructure that we selected this stadium as the venue, added Naik. Various discussions at the seminar include involvement of eminent coaches as well as experts from the field of science, sports and medicine. Role of coaches in Kabaddi,Methods of training,Philosophy and values, marketing the game are some of the discussions that have taken place at the workshop. Besides we have separate panel of medical experts who train these coaches on topics such as- doping, nutrition, sports psychology, sports philosophy and physical fitness, added Naik.
Popularity of Kabaddi is increasing day by day and we are sure that Kabaddi will one day make a mark at Olympics as well. We are preparing aiming for that day when Kabaddi will have the same glamour as cricket. Right now,we are working towards creating a pool of talented players who can make an impact on the international scenario. This work shop is organized keeping that in mind, said Mohan Bhavsar, general secretary MSKA.
Post the workshop, the coaches will go back to their district places and make the knowledge into practical use. MSKA has organised junior training programme as a follow up of this workshop in all the districts from May 23 to 30.
