Jockey from Pune dies during race

A 57-year-old jockey from Pune,Laxman Shyamrao,died during a race in Hyderabad on Saturday when three horses dashed into each other.

A 57-year-old jockey from Pune,Laxman Shyamrao,died during a race in Hyderabad on Saturday when three horses dashed into each other. Laxman had shifted to Hyderabad in 1990.

The Hyderabad police said the incident took place during the Elite Zone race of the monsoon season. Inspector S N Javed of Chadarghat police station said: “During the race,three horses hit each other. All three jockeys fell off the mount and were seriously injured. Laxman succumbed to injuries later. Other two jockeys Dilip and Shrikanth have injuries but are out of danger.”

Assistant inspector Parshuram,who is investigating the case,said: “We have been told that Laxman had shifted to Hyderebad from Pune some time in the early 90s. He had settled down here. He is survived by his wife,son and brother. They have been handed over the body after postmortem.”

Royal Western India Turf Club chairman Vivek Jain said death of any jockey on the track is tragic.

“He had not ridden in Western India for years. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family,” he said. Jain however did not comment on whether any financial aid will be provided to his wife and son.
