With an eye on improving one-way traffic system on Jangli Maharaj (JM) and Fergusson College (FC) Road, citys traffic control branch has decided to go for dedicated lanes for buses and heavy vehicles in two weeks.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Manoj Patil said the lane on the left side of the JM Road and FC Road would be marked for Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML),state transport and private tourist buses, tempos and other vehicles.
The lanes would be ready within 15 days. If buses and heavy vehicles do not take this lane they would be fined. The rest of the road would be available for light motor vehicles, Patil said.
Patil said everyday PMPML buses traverse JM Road-FC Road circular route about 3,000 times, state transport buses and private buses pass around 500 times and other heavy vehicles do the round about 800 times.
Meanwhile, the traffic police have decided to implement the one-way traffic plan again on the stretch between SG Barve junction and Jhansi Rani statue on JM Road, which was made two-way following the road mishap that killed a five-year-old boy on JM Road a few days ago. One-way traffic will begin on this stretch from September 20, Patil said. However, considering the demand from residents, the police have decided to close two internal roads Thopte Road and Trivedi Road for thorough traffic. Only residents would be using these roads, Patil said.
Patil, along with Municipal Commissioner Mahesh Zagde, had expressed that similar one-way traffic system would be taken up on other roads,if the experiment on JM Road-FC Road proves to be a success. He said the changes have been made permanent only on roads joining the Simla office junction,Sancheti Hospital junction and SG Barve junction.
The three junctions have become dangerous due to increase in the speed of vehicles after the implementation of one-way traffic system, he said.
He added channelisers would be put up at proper spots to ensure that vehicles turn at the junctions safely. Patil said soon pedestrian crossings and pedestrian signals would be in place on the stretch.
