Floods and droughts affect our country drastically every year and there is an immediate need for efficient ways to avoid such calamities, said former president APJ Abdul Kalam here on Sunday.
Kalam was speaking at the inauguration of a convention and exhibition by the Global Indian Scientists and Technocrats Forum (GIST).
What we need is a connection between water bodies in each state, only then can there be a solution to these problems, he said.
The theme of the two-day convention is ‘Scientific and technological approaches for sustainable use of water resources.
The availability of clean drinking water has become a global problem. Even after all these technological and scientific developments,a large number of people still lack access to clean drinking water. There is a need for the scientific community and the industries to find a synergy and work towards finding a solution to problems which are affecting so many people across the globe, said Kalam.
On GIST,Kalam said,This is a first of its kind initiative to provide a platform for the exchange of ideas among Indian scientists across the world. I hope we will see some innovative idea out of this forum which will at least help us take a step towards solving the problems related to water conservation.
GIST advisory board chairman Anil Kakodkar said,It is hoped that through the articulation facilitated by the eminent speakers and response papers for five sessions covering key areas of hydrology and climate change impacts, agriculture, drinking water for domestic or industrial use, water used in the energy sector and water for environment, the convention will be able to identify thrust areas and take them to the public at large in the second GIST Convention for deliberation.
