Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister M Veerappa Moily,who was on a brief visit to the city on Saturday,had to face an agitation staged by local unit of Shiv Sena,protesting against alleged atrocities against Marathi speaking population staying in bordering regions of Karnataka.
Moily along with Umashree,Karanataka Minister for Kannada and Culture were in the city to inaugurate a new auditorium at Kannada Sanghas Kaveri Group of Institutes in Eranadwane area here.
Since they had prior knowledge about duos visit to the city,Shiv Sainiks led by Sham Deshpande reached the spot in large numbers coinciding with the arrival of Moily and Umashree.
Carrying saffron flags and anti-Moily and anti-Umashree posters in their hands,Sainiks raised slogans against the duo and demanded justice and rightful living for Marathi-speaking population in bordering regions of Karanataka.
Anticipating angry protests,the police had deployed adequate bandobast on the spot. With nearing of scheduled timing of 4 pm of starting of public function,protesters intensified their agitation and demanded meeting with Moily.Conceding to the demand,the organisers allowed delegation of Shiv Sainiks to meet Moily.
The delegation held talks with Moily behind closed doors. Sham Deshpande said Moily assured to look into issues raised by Shiv Sena delegation. The Union Minister said he would talk to Karnataka chief minister over the alleged atrocities against Marathi speaking population staying in areas bordering with Maharashtra. He stressed importance for peaceful living of migrant population of both the states, he said.
Moily did not make any reference to agitation during his public speech during function,which he left after his address due to urgent commitments.
Tap potential in children: Moily
Speaking as a chief guest at new auditorium at Kannada Sanghas Kaveri Group of Institutes,Union Minister M Veerappa Moily urged teachers to tap different kinds of potential present in different children. No child is fool. Teachers should not denounce any student for want of specific merit. They should identify different kinds of potential possessed by each and every student,and groom them accordingly, he said. Moily also said that India can enjoy demographic dividend if it could provide right education to every child.
