In a humdinger of a contest where fortunes swung up and down, BJP candidate Pankaja Munde suffered a setback in her bid to secure political rehabilitation for herself as she was outsmarted by NCP (SP) candidate Bajrang Sonawane in Beed Lok Sabha constituency.

Though at the end 32nd round, the last one, Munde trailed by 6,585 votes, the declaration of the result was withheld by election officials after the Munde camp sought a recount from the 14th round. The result was eventually announced late at night. Munde had lost by 5,686 votes.

Much like the contests in Mumbai and Satara, Beed drew the attention of all of Maharashtra as the fortunes of the two candidates remained in the hunt at the end of every round. Till the 32nd round, no one was sure who would win.

Munde, who herself came to the counting centre in Beed in the afternoon, predicted that a defeat or a victory would be by a small margin. In the end, her prediction was right. ”Whatever the result, I will work with renewed vigour,” she told reporters. Her cousin and Maharashtra Minister Dhananjay Munde had led her campaign.

As per BJP sources, what pegged Munde on the backfoot was the Maratha reservation factor. ”Maratha quota activist Manoj Jarange-Patil had told community members that those from BJP who had tried to scuttle his agitation and deny Marathas their quota should be taught a lesson,” said a BJP leader. Beed was one of the districts which had witnessed violence during the Maratha agitation last year.

Munde, BJP’s national secretary, had replaced her sister Pritam Munde in the Beed seat. She had been in somewhat of a political wilderness since her defeat in 2019 Assembly elections and was looking for political rehabilitation with a victory in Beed.

NCP (SP) spokesperson Mahesh Tapase said, ”Bajrang Sonawane was picked by our party chief Sharad Pawar to contest from Beed. He was actually part of the leaders who had walked away with Ajit Pawar when he joined hands with BJP. We knew Sonawane would put up a tough fight, but winning against a top leader like Pankaja Munde is indeed laudable.”

During the campaign, Ajit Pawar had addressed a rally for Munde where he debunked Sonawane, a sugar baron. ”Just a few days ago, he was with me, seeking my help for his sugar factory. I don’t know what has gone wrong with him, and why he is contesting the LS election,” Ajit Pawar had said while trying to chide him.

Meanwhile, in Solapur, Congress candidate Praniti Shinde brought big cheer to the Sushil Kumar Shinde family as she won the Lok Sabha seat defeating BJP’s Ram Satpute by a comfortable margin of over 74,000 votes.

Solapur, once the bastion of Congress, had fallen to BJP. In the last two elections, Praniti’s father, Sushil Kumar Shinde, former CM, had lost to little known leaders. Shinde had thereupon decided not to contest Lok Sabha elections anymore. Earlier, his wife was also defeated from the same seat. ”Praniti has restored the family’s pride,” a Congress leader said.

Congress played its cards shrewdly in Solapur. It apparently got the VBA candidate to withdraw from the race. In 2019 elections, the votes polled by VBA candidate Prakash Ambedkar were instrumental in Shinde’s defeat, another Congress leader said. ”This time, the VBA candidate withdrew from the race while opposing the BJP’s bid to change the constitution. This worked in Praniti’s favour,” the leader added.

Mahesh Kothe, an NCP (S-P) leader said, “Praniti Shinde’s work as an MLA stood her in good stead. She has been the face of Congress in Solapur and draws good support and guidance from her father.”

For the first 16 years, he worked on the desk, edited stories, made pages, wrote special stories and handled The Indian Express edition. In 31 years of his career, he has regularly written stories on a range of topics, primarily on civic issues like state of roads, choked drains, garbage problems, inadequate transport facilities and the like. He has also written aggressively on local gondaism. He has primarily written civic stories from Pimpri-Chinchwad, Khadki, Maval and some parts of Pune. He has also covered stories from Kolhapur, Satara, Solapur, Sangli, Ahmednagar and Latur. He has had maximum impact stories from Pimpri-Chinchwad industrial city which he has covered extensively for the last three decades.   Manoj More has written over 20,000 stories. 10,000 of which are byline stories. Most of the stories pertain to civic issues and political ones. The biggest achievement of his career is getting a nearly two kilometre road done on Pune-Mumbai highway in Khadki in 2006. He wrote stories on the state of roads since 1997. In 10 years, nearly 200 two-wheeler riders had died in accidents due to the pathetic state of the road. The local cantonment board could not get the road redone as it lacked funds. The then PMC commissioner Pravin Pardeshi took the initiative, went out of his way and made the Khadki road by spending Rs 23 crore from JNNURM Funds. In the next 10 years after the road was made by the PMC, less than 10 citizens had died, effectively saving more than 100 lives. Manoj More's campaign against tree cutting on Pune-Mumbai highway in 1999 and Pune-Nashik highway in 2004 saved 2000 trees. During Covid, over 50 doctors were  asked to pay Rs 30 lakh each for getting a job with PCMC. The PCMC administration alerted Manoj More who did a story on the subject, asking then corporators how much money they demanded....The story worked as doctors got the job without paying a single paisa. Manoj More has also covered the "Latur drought" situation in 2015 when a "Latur water train" created quite a buzz in Maharashtra. He also covered the Malin tragedy where over 150 villagers had died.     Manoj More is on Facebook with 4.9k followers (Manoj More), on twitter manojmore91982 ... Read More
