Technical festivals are probably some of the few events that offer a breathing space for students who study engineering under the burden of cramped courses and an overload of projects. While they do keep engineering related programmes as their main focus, what they do offer is a new dimension to take a look at the regular drab stuff engineering courses are comprised of. Something similar was the engineering festival by the students of College of Engineering Pune (COEP) that was held from October 8 till October 10.
The festival entered its fourth year in 2010,had events from various branches of engineering that dealt with everything from circuit boards to computer software, and from crankshafts to transformers. Anurag Bura, head of the event said,All the arrangements for the event were made by the students themselves. This was our fourth year and we have received a huge response for it. This year we had teams from Delhi and Chennai, and others from engineering colleges from cities like Amravati,Karad, and different cities all over Maharastra.
This year around the festival had events like Circuit Fixer (electronics),Code Junkie (programming),CNC Lathe,Contraption,Chakravyuh,Alchemy (technical quiz),Cog Fight (Robotics),Intelligent Design 2D,SwimBiosis,Wheelomation and so on. In fact, this year,8500 students from 150 colleges participated in the event. Aditya Padhey,a core team member said,SwimBiosis, and Wheelomation were the most popular events, which attracted the maximum audience. SwimBiosis involved competition between robots made by the students themselves. Wheelomation,on the other hand, sees students making small vehicles and racing them against each other.
Another interesting event that was held during the festival was Contraption in which students had to make use of non-conventional energy sources and solve a given problem. Regarding the event Dhiraj Deshpande,Contraption coordinator says,This year we had a higher number of students participating in the contest as compared to the previous years. The theme for the event was Save the Tiger, and the students were given a problem to solve,at the end of which, they had to display the picture of a tiger and through it,show a parallel line of message that showcased the same.
Prashant Pradhan,of Premier Automobiles, who was judge for Contraption, sharing his experience about the event, says,The students displayed lots of creativity and knowledge, and they knew that what they were making,as their ideas were clear. Apart from that student used waste material for making the models. One thing that I want to mention is though there were students who do not have the kind of exposure as students from Pune have they were just as good as the students from the city if not better.
