The owners still believe in offering items at prices that suits all pockets
One might almost miss the place as one meanders through the by lanes of the Sadashiv Peth area on a lazy Sunday afternoon, and yet when the temperature soar on a scorching hot summer afternoon, the hidden Buwa Icecreamwale becomes a sorts of safe haven for all those looking to escape from the unforgiving heat.
For almost a century now the store that popularised the ice cream parlour concept has been in the business. However post the development of the same a mélange of vendors mushroomed in almost every nook and corner of the city setting up parlours for multinational ice cream conglomerates which pushed the store into relegation
While, most of people in the city prefer fast moving ice cream parlours and shops to enjoy the icy dessert but there are few who still comes through long way to enjoy some 50 years old trusted flavours of ice ream and Mastani. Sudhir More,a seventy-year-old customer who has been a regular at the store shares his memories and says I have been coming to this shop for the last 60 years. First it was my father who introduced me to the store and since then I keep coming here regularly on weekends in order to enjoy my favourite Kesar Mastani which costs a mere Rs.45
The menu of the shop Khaladkar says, still offers the same traditional tasting Mastanis and ice creams. Even rare to find flavours like Sitafal Mastani (Rs 50) and Badami Kulfi (Rs15) along with regular flavours like kesar, mango, pista, butter scotch in ice creams that fall in the price range of Rs15 to Rs 35 are available here. The Mastanis are priced between Rs 25 to Rs 50. We still believe that everyone should be able to afford these delights and despite the rising prices of commodities we have maintained our prices at a significantly lower amount to ensure that they get the product at the same price range, he adds.
Their speciality however lies in the different types of Mastanis with flavours like Gulkand and Anjeer, which blends discreetly with rich cream and milk and give a hot day a cool beating. And while the ambience of the parlour seems to be old school and looks unassuming the quality of the ice cream still manages to draw people to it sans any known man-made barriers.
