The first day of Signature Premier Pune Style Week was a colourful event. Fashion designers, models and fashion enthusiasts in the city gathered at Hyatt Regency to read the pulse of latest trends in Indian fashion. The line-up featured designers Mona Pali from Kolkata,Nitya Singh from Pune and
Rocky S from Mumbai.
First up,Pali showcased her collection under the label,Monapali. Ankle-length anarkalis with flairs, and straight-cut kurtas teamed with lehenga-styled skirts created a riot of colours on the ramp. The hairstyling was neat with a gerbera flower secured in tight slick buns. Showstopper Simran Kaur Mundi walked the ramp in a black sari with an underplay of colours. I have kept the silhouettes soft and flowing with lesser emphasis on structuring. My collection is all about celebrating colours, said Pali.
Next,Pune-girl Singh showcased her collection, called Attitude. Models walked the ramp in saris ranging from black and white polka dots to monochromatic stripes interspersed with neon colours and floral patterns. A selection of checked saris in red and yellow caught the attention. Singh stayed away from accessorising to draw more focus to her saris.
She played it simple with blouses as well, though fashionistas whispered about the need to work on their fitting. The models were styled in a rush. I consciously didnt want accessorising because I wanted the saris to stand out. I asked the models to get their own shoes, because of which they were not uniform. The saris were draped in a hurry,as I had too many things on my hands, said Singh.
For Rocky S closing show, models walked the ramp in glamourous evening dresses inspired by vintage English fashion from the 20s to the 40s. As the audience appreciated the outfits,a model tripped over her floor-kissing dress, followed by others. Even the showstopper, actor Pooja Chopra (from the film Commando),who walked slowly with caution, stumbling slightly over her white and beige fish-tailed skirt.
The guests identified with the collection as very Great Gatsby-ish but Rocky clarified that the collection was made some months before the films release. My designs are inspired by vintage fashion that prevailed in England from the 20s to the 40s,which is also the period in which the film The Great Gatsby is based, hence the similarity in styles. It was a time when women felt feminine and dressed accordingly. This is something the women of today fail to understand in their styling, he said.
