Critical care congress
The 18th annual congress of the Indian Society of Critical Care Medicine will get underway in the city from today. The congress will bring together an international audience with an interest in critical care and emergency medicine. Dr Kapil Zirpe,organising secretary,said,Critical care practices in India have evolved significantly over the past decade. Critical care initially began as a service in major hospitals,but with the formation of the Indian Society of Critical Care Medicine,its development has been very rapid. There are currently about 200 medical colleges with hospitals attached to them in India. Additionally,there are more than 1000 district hospitals but only 10 per cent of all these hospitals have properly equipped or staffed intensive care units (ICUs). Dr Shirish Prayag,chairman,Congress,said,The faculty includes 25-30 international luminaries as well as Indian faculty who will share their experiences and provide insights into their field.
The Legal Side
Dwarika Post-Graduate Medical Institution,(DPGMI) Pune,which organised its 28th CME/ Refresher Course for family doctors and medical officers,focused on Legal Offences and Legal Calamities for Medical professionals as one of the topics this year. Dr Arvind Sangamnerkar said that the topic had assumed immense importance in today’s world looking at the cases and punishments awarded to doctors recently. Family doctors and doctors in rural areas and semi-urban areas specifically need to know the realities behind the Offences and Calamities,he added. The CME was held on February 12 at the Symbiosis Vishwa Bhawan Auditorium,Senapati Bapat Road. The CME will also dwell on Rheumatoid Arthritis Diagnosis & Management in a dispensary by well-known rheumatologist Dr Arvind Chopra,and Menstrual Problems Management in a Dispensary by noted gynecologist Dr Hemant Deshpande.
New Appointment
Dr Peter Nightingale was recently appointed the President of Acoris Research Ltd,Pune. Nightingale is a PhD in Chemistry from the University of Manchester,United Kingdom and a process development chemist with over 30 years of global experience in development,scale up,technology transfer in the pharmaceutical,agrochemical and fine chemical sectors. His expertise ranges from small scale process development to large scale operations.
Research Projects
Nearly 120 research projects with a proposed budget touching nearly Rs 5 crore this year too were sanctioned at the recently concluded Armed Forces Medical Research conference. The projects were largely distributed amongst the specialities of Internal Medicine and allied subjects,Surgery and allied subjects including dental surgery,pathology and related para-clinical specialities,Preventive and Community health and specific to terrain and climate research projects DGAFMS. Lt Gen H L Kakria,said that the objectives of the conference had been fully realised and that the proposals approved would in the long run provide the healthcare system of the AFMS.
