Converting their noble thoughts into action,Vishranti Hospital recently inaugurated a Critical Cancer Palliative Care Centre for poor and lower middle class people. The centre provides inpatient care when the patient still has a hope left and the family is unable to cope with the crisis situations. The centre provides intensive care of symptom relief / obstruction pain and send back the patients to their homes with the encouragement that their home care programmes would continue to support them with professional care at home. “We have acquired constructed premises at Bhawani Peth and have commenced our free inpatient services as a 10-bedded hospital for the advanced stage cancer patients,who are already under our home care programme. We have so far been able to set up the facility for five beds. We have acquired the third floor of the same premises so that we can set complete the set up of the ten-bedded hospital,says N S Nyayapathi,honorary director and founder trustee.

Screening camp
A free screening camp for prostate disorders for men over 55 years of age was held at the Command Hospital on February 22. The camp was jointly organised by Care India Medical Society and Command Hospital,Southern Command,Pune. It was sponsored by the Kindle Light Foundation and co-sponsored by the Rotary Club of Pune. The objective behind organising the camp was to bring to the attention of all aging men on an important health disorder such as Prostate enlargement and better awareness. Colonel Nyayapathi,director,Care India says that asymptomatic men are at an equal risk as compared to symptomatic men and therefore there is a great need to educate all men over 55 years to undergo screening procedures. A total number of 161 senior citizens benefited from the camp.

Surgery camp
R M Dhariwal Foundation’s Matoshree Madanbai Dhariwal Hospital (MMDH),Shirur in alliance with Nimone Grampanchayat organised a free treatment and surgery camp recently at Nimone Grampanchayat Hall. MMDH’s renowned surgeon Dr Ravindra Bhosale was the consulting doctor for the day. The camp aimed at resolving the problems of patients suffering from appendicitis,hernia,goiter,piles,fistula,hydrosil,tumors,ovarion cyst,oral cancer,breast cancer and so on. Speaking about this initiative,Shobha Dhariwal,vice-president,Rasiklal Manikchand Dhariwal Foundation,said,”Most of the rural population doesn’t have access to hospitals. They do not even know what problem they exactly have and which treatment is suitable for it. Many of them search for affordable remedies and even get duped by cons in the process. Through this camp we tried to bridge this gap and provide them with free consultancy and suitable treatment at subsidized rates.”

Up-to-date
The inaugural day of the silver jubilee year celebration of Continuing Medical Education (CME) cum Refresher Course for family doctors and medical officers by Dwarika Post-Graduate Medical Institution,witnessed huge participation. Addressing the gathering,Dr Narendra Jadhav,vice-chancellor,Pune University,said,”CME is an important aspect in times of continuous rapid progress in every field especially medicine and it was important for practitioners to attend such programmes to update themselves with new knowledge.” The event was held at Vishwa Bhawan Auditorium. Dr Arvind Sangamnerkar,chief organiser of the event,said that the institute has been conducting such programmes since the last 24 years. A special entertainment programme by noted singers Avdhut Gupte and Vaishali Samant was also organised to celebrate the ocassion.

Health camp held
Ruby Hall Clinic and Samarth Police Station,Zone II had organised a free health awareness and screening camp for police personnel and their families recently at Somwar Peth Police Lane. Prabhat Kumar,additional commisioner of Police – West Zone and Satish Khandare,DCP Zone II,Pune inaugrated the screening camp. The purpose of organising the camp was to — Increase public awareness regarding hazards of tobacco use and abuse; spread the message about WHO initiatives for anti-tobacco campaigns; promote healthy lifestyle and habits among people. In this camp expert panel of doctors from Ruby Hall clinic examined the police and their families personally. More than 300 persons availed the benefit of this camp.

Healthy champs
To stress the importance of good health and healthy living in kids the Healthy Champ contest was organised recently by DSK School. The contest winners are Saee Nikhal Shayana Mirashi and Arya Chandak in different age groups. Around 140 children participated in the contest.The gift and cash prize were given to the winners and their parents at the hands of Hemanti Kulkarni,group director. The judges for the event were Dr Vijaya Vanjape,Dr Vivek Vidhwans,Dr Pandurang Pungatia,and Dr Vanmala Mulik. “Irrespective of weight,the overall development of the child was taken into consideration”,said Dr Vanjape.

Seminar on obesity and asthma camp
Lions Club of Pune Seniors and WNHO clinic will be organising an obesity seminar for prevention of chronic illness on March 7 at Garukul lawn,Mhatre bridge,Erandwane. The camp for chronic steroid dependant asthmatic patients,organised by Lions club of Pune Seniors in collaboration with Academy of Asthma and Allergy,will conclude on February 28. The camp include total investigations like – allergy testing,PFT and medicine for four months with a medical follow up.
