Rare cardiac intervention
A young,22 years old female patient came to Fabiani and Budhrani Heart Institute with limitation of routine activity because of severe breathing difficulty. On evaluation she was found to have two stenosed heart valves out of four valves (mitral stenosis and tricuspid stenosis),which were responsible for her breathing difficulty. After discussing the pros and cons of Percutaneous balloon procedure and the young age of the patient, hospital authorities and family members of the patients decided to go ahead with the process. Cardiologist,Dr Manohar Sakhare,an interventional cardiologist with the hospital carried out the procedure. The procedure was done from the right groin. Through the right groin vessels (femoral vein) we passed the catheter in the right upper chamber (right atrium) of the heart. With the help of the needle the atrial septum (membrane between upper two chambers of the heart) is punctured. Then the balloon was inserted from the groin vessels through the atrial septum, into the left side of the heart. Initially the left side of the valve (mitral) dilated successfully. The balloon was pulled by and then the right sided valve dilated successfully without complications. The patient was discharged after two days. Presently, after more than one month follow-up,the patient is doing fine and able to carry out her physical activities without breathing difficulties, stated a press release.
