Hard Talk

Tucked away in an inconspicuous corner across the college ground the canteen of the Abasaheb Garware College is a blink and miss affair.

Tucked away in an inconspicuous corner across the college ground the canteen of the Abasaheb Garware College is a blink and miss affair. And yet, even though it may sound paradoxical, the place is a hotbed for discussions about burning worldly issues and also local ones. Combining this along with the regular campus talk which comprises of lectures and in house happenings the Garware College canteen is home to this and a lot more.

“The cricket world cup is a current favourite amongst us,” says third year Amit Kamble,as he speaks about the talks that he and his friends have. “With the matches, statistics, and players making up the rest of the conversation. It also includes a lot of the match analysis that are done by us students sitting here,” he adds. Be it cricket or even the 2G spectrum scam the students here believe that knowing all is a surefire way to empower themselves. For instance first year Commerce student Mukul Gaikwad says,“Day-to-day news items, local issues and also student related topics are important conversation points too. In fact we do believe that it is equally important for us students to know about what is happening in the outside world as it is to know about our classes and our lectures.”

The students of the college also have a social group that comprises of college students called the Samrat group that works towards conducting blood donation camps, visits to old age homes and other allied issues. Second year student,Sameer Javalekar who is a member of the group says,“The activities of our group are mainly social in nature and the discussions regarding those also form an important part of our talks daily.”
