Lightness of Being and Seeing Pankaj and Nidhis collection,Foretelling Geometry, may have been unnervingly titled but it had an arresting mix of the simple and the complex. Cutwork, lattice work, origami and convex mirrors as accessories, light bulbs used to illuminate an otherwise sane collection in cotton, silk and vinyl there were numerous elements. Making complex garments look like fluid fashion is not easy and if these are the results of the duos obsession with pattern making, then may their tribe grow.
Boom of Blooms
Phool Bagan,Anupamaa Dayals collection dwelt on motifs of butterflies and flowers in bloom from magnolias and camelias to peonies and roses. In keeping with her signature style, she went easy on sequins and let the floral prints and bright colours do the screaming. Oozing femininity, this range scored in wearability and its retro feel. What we really loved were the black-and-white polka-dotted blouses offsetting the brightly hued saris. A throwback to the time when romances were set against colour.
Rainbow Excess
The lights dimmed. Two screens showed a video of the destruction of the earth and the dawn of a new beginning. The rainbow, said an announcement, was the inspiration for designer Charu Parashars collection,Hope and Joy. The collection, with clothes in rainbow colours, was way too literal. Instead of experimenting with colour,Parashar created rainbows everywhere. The straw hats, bandanas and colourful bangles only added to the chaos.
Tamasha Fashion
Nida Mahmoods collection that paid a tribute to The Great Indian Tamasha was not hard on the eyes, nor can we say that the drama preceding the show wasnt entertaining enough. But she didnt show us anything new. Her Manish Arora-like collection did nothing for those who came in expecting that her story has moved on. The bright and bold katputhli prints and bold fluorescent colours said the same thing over and over again,in the same fashion too.
Star on the Beach
Deepika Padukone as the showstopper for Wendell Rodricks proved how closely designers work with sponsors. Padukone is the brand ambassador for ITC Fiama Di Wills, who sponsored Rodricks show. Rejuvenating Moonlight Beach was inspired by Goas beach parties of the 1960s and 70s. Padukone walked in a moonlight white bridal beach gown with rose petal confetti and butterflies. She looked lovely, few noticed the dress.
Fashions Flying Kite
Sashaying down the runway is now second nature to Kangana Ranaut. She had a confident air as she walked for designer Shantanu Goenka. The collection, however, left a lot to be desired. Taking its inspiration from the French queen Mary Antoinette, the line was opulent all the way. The rich prints, ruffles or the heavily embroidered leggings, were Over The Top and looked straight out of a Victorian-themed wedding. Not for an Indian Summer.
