Feroz Rahim Bangali (43),who had unleashed a reign of terror in upmarket Kondhwa, died at Sasson Hospital on Sunday morning. He was found unconscious in Yerwada Jail where he was an undertrial and taken to the hospital on Thursday.

Doctors said he had suffered “brain damage.” Blood and other samples taken from Bangali have been sent to the Forensic Lab to ascertain the exact cause of death. Doctors suspect that Bangali might have taken ill after consuming some sedatives that he might have been addicted to. But activists raised doubts saying how Bangali could procure the sedatives inside jail.

“Bangali was in an unconscious state since the time he was brought to the hospital. He might have consumed some substance like sleeping pills. His brain had suffered substantial damage. But we can’t comment on what poison claimed his life till reports from the Forensic Lab are come in,” said P S Pawar, superintendent of Sassoon Hospital.

Human rights activist Asim Sarode said,“A lot of medicines contain sedatives and a lot of people lodged in Yerwada jail keep them. The prison administration seizes them during regular rounds. I feel the hospital inside the prison should be better equipped so that there is less need to admit prisoners to other hospitals.”

The police have stepped up security in Kondhwa area to prevent any backlash from supporters of Bangali.

“Bangali had forcibly acquired property worth around Rs 4 crore. We had invoked the MCOCA against him on May 21. After he was arrested,a lot of people came forward to register complaints against him. After his death, there are chances that more people may register complaints,” said DCP Jalinder Supekar.

Supekar said Bangali had terrorized people of Kondhwa and nearby areas. After the new Kondhwa police station was started and the police cracked down on Bangali,a lot of people heaved a sigh of relief.
