Soon after paying homage to her deceased brother, former city mayor and Congress leader Rajani Tribhuvan passed away on Wednesday due to heart attack. She was 61 years old.

Her elder brother Mahendra Alhat had passed away in the city and Tribhuvan visited his residence to pay homage to her brother. “She felt uneasy while in grief and collapsed. The former mayor was taken to a hospital in Vishrantwadi where she was pronounced dead,” said a local Congress leader Suhas Yadav who was present at the location where she collapsed.

Tribhuvan was the city mayor from 2004 to 2006. The Congress leader was a resident of Tadiwala road area and lived a simple life. She had emerged from a poor family living in slums to make it big in city politics. She would be remembered for her efforts to resolve problems of the urban poor.

Her last rites were performed at Kailas crematorium.

Tribhuvan was active during recently held lok sabha elections and had campaigned for Congress candidate Ravindra Dhangekar.

“She was an inspiration for all. In her tenure as city Mayor she performed very well to resolve civic issues,” said city NCP (SP) chief and former mayor Prashant Jagtap.
