Four city teachers—Rashmi Gupta,Monika Mishra,Savita Sharma and Veena Naik—came back to India after having the most enriching learning experience of their life from the US Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville,Alabama. The teachers participated in Honeywell’s Scholarship Program which was conducted in partnership with USSRC from June 12 to June 28. The main aim of the programme was to make teachers more effective educators so that they in turn could inspire their students. The space academy programme was chosen because space studies is an amalgamation of all the science subjects. The teachers were on a jam-packed schedule which included classes, activities, trips to the space craft museum and informative sessions on space rockets. “We lived the life of an astronaut,” said Gupta. They were trained like astronauts, taught space survival skills, flight dynamics and were given scenario-based space missions and performed jet simulations. The teachers said they gained immensely from this experience and that it will help them develop new ideas and techniques to teach science that go beyond classroom walls and books.
