As the countdown begins to the final before the final on Wednesday, the vibrant,charged-up atmosphere in the city has prompted a local filmmaker to capture the different energy of cricket fans through a documentary,Celebrating Team India: World Cup 2011.
Jay Ji,34,has been making corporate films for the past ten years and recently finished directing his first feature film,Pune Take Care. The film, which will be released after the fourth edition of the IPL,also features Jay as the music composer, with one of his songs being rendered by singer Kunal Ganjawala. His latest venture, however, was the result of the tense anticipation ahead of the Indo-Pak semifinal. Everywhere you go,people are talking about the match. There is an air of extreme excitement which I wanted to capture. I would like to can this spirit of the World Cup, Ji told Newsline on Tuesday.
Filming began on Monday when the crew captured shades of the build-up to the big match. We spoke to people from different strata of the society about how the cricket World Cup affects their lives. We gauged a bit of the enthusiasm in store, he said. Tuesday morning saw the crew visit Moti Chowk near Budhwar Peth and interview some of the flag-sellers. They were also selling some tricolour pagdis. Both the items were selling briskly and we interviewed some of the customers as well, said Ji. Later, they canned a few shots of the Gymkhanas on FC Road and spoke to some college students about their views on Wednesdays match. This was followed by shots of a discussion, open to the general public,on the World Cup. We captured the publics view on how India has performed and will perform in the matches to come, said Jay. The match day will be the most important day of filming. The crew will be focusing on the match being screened even as they talk to the viewers on the streets, outside shops and so on during the match, capturing every emotion through the ups and downs of the contest. Filming will continue on the day of the final too (April 2),provided India are playing.
The movie is set to be 15-20 minutes long and will be released two-three days after the World Cup ends, after editing and sound addition. Ji plans to distribute it online and on social networking sites. He said the film would be given more exposure if India win the Cup. We plan to upload the movie on YouTube,Facebook and Orkut. If India win the World Cup,we will take the movie to the theatres, he said.
