Farmer, 8-year-old son killed, wife hurt after hit by mini-truck driven by drunk man

A 43-year-old farmer and his eight-year-old son were killed and his wife was critically injured after their bike was hit by a Tempo driven by a 30-year-old drunk man on Pabal Road in Pune’s Shirur taluka, police said Wednesday.

The Shikrapur police identified the deceased as Bhausaheb Kauram Chaudhari, a resident of Pabal, and his son Ashwin. Chaudhari’s wife Anita (40) was seriously injured in the accident. Police have arrested the Tempo driver, Amol Sudam Kadam (30), a resident of Chandoli village in Khed taluka. A medical examination revealed that he was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident, according to the police.

Around 9.15 pm on July 31, Bhausaheb, Anita and Ashwin were on their way home after work. When they were on the road between Pabal and Kanhur Mesai villages, their bike was hit by the Tempo from behind, knocking all of them down. All three were taken to a nearby hospital by some local residents. Bhausaheb and Ashwin were pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.

“The investigation has revealed that the driver was driving under influence. He has been arrested and charged with culpable homicide,” said Inspector Pramod Kshirsagar of the Shikrapur police station.

The youngest of Bhausaheb and Anita’s four children, Ashwin was a Class 3 student.

Expressway traffic diverted after container overturns in Khandala tunnel

The traffic on the Pune-Mumbai corridor of the expressway had to be diverted for two hours on Wednesday after a container overturned inside the Khandala tunnel around noon. An officer from the state highway patrol said the Mumbai-bound container ended up blocking the entire width of the corridor. “We diverted the traffic via Pune Mumbai Old Highway till the time the container was removed by cranes,” said highway police Superintendent Lata Phad.

The traffic flow was restored around 2 pm, officials said.
