The Cartoonists’ Combine, a state-based cartoonists’ association, on Monday inaugurated ‘Salaam Kalam’, an exhibition to pay tribute to former president Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, at Bal Gandharva Rang Mandir art gallery. The three-day exhibition, which was inaugurated by retired Air Marshal Bhushan Gokhale, has over 100 cartoons by 45-odd cartoonists from across the state on display.
“We came up with the idea of creating cartoons dedicated to him and put up the exhibition in just 8 days,” said Vaijnath Dulange, one of the curators and contributing cartoonists.
The cartoons on display are primarily printouts of originals created by artists. These attempt to project Kalam’s life as India’s ‘missile man’ and one of the country’s most loved presidents. Besides caricatures projecting the former president’s unique manner and style, garb and personality, some demonstrate missiles and rockets with the colours of the Indian flag. Other cartoons enhance Kalam’s thoughts, such as – “Dream, Dream and Dream. Dreams transform into thoughts and thoughts result in actions.”

“The exhibition depicts various facets of Kalam’s personality. He taught the younger generation to be optimistic and be dreamers. After the exhibition, it will be great if a booklet of the cartoons, along with Kalam’s thoughts and quotes, is released on his birthday on October 15,” said Air Marshal Gokhale.
Explaining the purpose of the exhibition, Charuhas Pandit, president, Cartoonists’ Combine, and also a contributing cartoonist, said, “Kalam was an inspiration for children and youngsters. When someone passes away, his thoughts also pass away. However, while leaving, he reminded us never to forget Vision 2020.”
India Vision 2020 was a document prepared by Department of Science and Technology under the chairmanship of Kalam, envisaging a developed India by 2020. The document also became the theme for the book titled ‘India 2020: A Vision for the New Millennium’ released in 1998.
On Monday, during the exhibition, artist Dulange did a live caricature of Air Marshal Gokhale.
